Washington calls on Khartoum, rebels to stop fighting

The US has called for "immediate halting" of the acts of violence in Darfur district to the west of Sudan and accused the Sudanese government and the rebels of being behind it.

The spokesman for the US Department Of State Richard Boucher said on Thursday "we are very upset over the violent confrontations and flagrant violations of cease fire in Darfur." Boucher deplored "the Sudanese planes bombardment of villages" as well as the operations carried out by Jangawid militias -- and in particular accused the Sudan Liberation Army, one of the rebel groups in Darfur -- of violating all its promises through the attacks against the villages in recent days.

However, the two sides of the conflict signed a cease-fire agreement in April 2004 but this agreement has been regularly violated since then.

Sources in the relief groups in Khartoum said on Thursday that the Sudanese government violated the cease fire with the Darfur rebels when it bombarded a village in North Darfur district.

Both the US and Britain condemned the attack which reports said it took place in al-Mu'allim area on the border between North and South Darfur districts. An area which the Sudanese government say the rebels launch an attack in it during the past days in which they burnt 8 villages and killed scores of persons.
