Iraqis killed in various parts of Iraq, bombardment of ballot centers

Gunmen have escalated the pace of their attacks in various parts of Iraq just 72 hours from the date of the elections and launched a series of attacks that resulted in several killings and injured in the lines of the Iraqis and the American forces while more ballot centers were bombarded.

Five Iraqis were killed and other 15 persons were injured in a bomb explosion that targeted a patrol for the Iraqi national guards in Algeria's quarters in al-Mahmoudeyah city to the south of Baghdad yesterday morning.

One Iraqi was also killed in a booby trapped car explosion near the offices of the municipality chairman in Baqouba to the north east of Baghdad. One witness said that the explosion sets fire in several cars.

Two strong explosions hit the downtown of Ramadi yesterday morning after the American and the Iraqi national guards forces entered the city. Fire columns of smoke were seen coming out of the place. The volume of casualties was not disclosed.

In Tikrit, one Iraqi translator working with the American forces in a bomb explosion targeted his car in the downtown of the city. Three traffic police men were injured in the attacks. Following the explosion, the American forces detained the AP reporter Ahmad Nouri together with three personnel of the Iraqi channel who were at the site of the explosion.

The headquarters of the higher commission for elections in Tikrit was attacked by Katyusha missiles and resulted in injuring one woman and her child. Gunmen also detonated one school used as ballot centers and implanted explosives in another center. Gunmen also detonated explosives in three election centers in Karkouk but no casualties were reported.

In Samera, one Iraqi civilian was killed and another was injured in al-Qadeseyah quarters following clashes between the American forces and gunmen.

The American forces detained in Alexandria city to the south of Baghdad Sheikh Abbas Muhammad Jasem, one member of the Muslim Scholars Commission and his two brothers. These forces also detained in Musil city Hashem Yahya al-Tai, one of the leading figures of the Iraqi Islamic party in the city together with his two sons.
