AL Azhar Grand Imam regrets linking jihad to terrorism
Egypt-Regional, Religion, 1/27/2005

The Grand Imam of Al Azhar Mohamad Sayyed Tantawi affirmed that peace was one of Islam's principles, pointing out that Islam considered any attack on a human being as an attack on all humanity.

The Grand Imam regretted attempts aiming at mixing Jihad with terrorism, saying that Jihad was enacted in Islam for self- defence and helping the wronged.

During a meeting on Wednesday with a US church delegation, the Grand Imam condemned all forms of terrorism either against Muslims or non-Muslims.

On his part, Bishop Thomas Hewitt, the head of the delegation expressed appreciation of AL Azhar's role in presenting the true image of Islam.

He said that the national council for churches in the United States was working hard to achieve peace in the Middle East, especially between the Palestinians and Israel.
