Jordanian police disperse trade union meetings
Jordan, Politics, 1/27/2005
The Jordanian police pervented on Wednesday a meeting by force for the trade union organizations presumed to be held in the trade union complex in Amman.
News reports said that the police closed the entrances and roads leading to the complex without convening a meeting which the trade union leaderships called for on Wednesday.
The reports added that confrontations took place between trade union organizations and the police and the latter beat the trade unions by sticks and expelled them from the area. No casualties were reported.
Member of the Jordanian trade union council Samieh Khreis said in this regard, the Jordanian constitution guaranteed the right of expression, adding that Jordanian trade unionists are not carrying out political activities, rather talk about issues of concern to the public opinion.
He explained that the topics are put in demanding the release of Jordanian prisoners in Israel, halting normalization, adding that what was carried out by the government towards the trade union is not understandable.
Worthy mentioning that the governor of Amman, Abdul Karim al-Malahemah, two days ago issued a memorandum to the secretary general of the trade union complex Amin Shaqawerah notifying him to ban any political activities inside the complex without his consent. A matter which the trade Union rejected calling all its branches to convene the meeting defying the embargo decision.
