Lebanon rejects change to UNIFIL's mission
Lebanon-UN, Politics, 1/26/2005
Lebanon has officially complained against the possibility of changing the mission of the UN Interim Forces working in South Lebanon UNIFIL by the UN Security Council or decreasing its work mission which is renewed every 6 months.
The Lebanese foreign ministry summoned the ambassadors of member states at the UN Security Council to notify them Lebanon's official complaint on the extension draft resolution which was proposed by Paris and Washington. This resolution is expected to be discussed on Friday.
UNIFIL was formed in march 1978 in order to follow up the withdrawal of the Israeli forces from south Lebanon which was only implemented in May 2000.
The force in charge of monitoring cease- fire along the Lebanese- Israeli border currently includes 2000 military men and 500 civilians. It was extended for the last time by the end of July 2004.
