Measures to ensure security of the elections
Iraq, Politics, 1/26/2005

News reports said that two American soldiers were injured in a bomb explosion that targeted their vehicle in the downtown of Tikrit. Ten election centers in various parts of Salah Eddine governorate were attacked by explosives and mortars alleged by al-Qaida Organization In Mesopotamia led by the Jordanian Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

In an attempt to limit these attacks and ensure the security of the election process, the American army started to run naval patrols on the coasts of the Euphrates and deploy tanks on the strategic land roads, backed by air force coverage.

These measures came as part of similar security measures to be implemented by the interim Iraqi government as from January 29th. These include curfew on unlicensed vehicles and closing the Iraqi land and air borders.

Within the same file, the International Organization for Migration expects that one quarter of the Iraqis living abroad, estimated at 1.2 million persons, will register for the election before closing the door of registration by the end on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for the migration Organization in Australia said that the number of Iraqis live abroad whose names are registered to vote reached 237704 on Sunday evening.
