Regional, Politics, 1/25/2005
The secretary general of the Arab League (AL) Amr Moussa announced that Algeria and the Arab League have reached a total agreement on all issued to be debated at the Arab summit to be held in Algiers on march 22 and 23.
He stressed that the issue of rotating presidency for the AL "was closed and is not debated at the Algeria's summit agenda."
In a press conference following his meeting with the Algerian foreign minister Abdul Aziz Balkhadem in Algiers yesterday, in preparation for the Arab summit, Moussa said on the position of the AL concerning the UN Security Council resolution concerning Syria and Lebanon no. ( 1559) that several Syrian officials gave their comments to this effect, noting the special relations between Syria and Lebanon and stressed the need of honoring all UN Security Council resolutions and not choosing selectively.
Concerning the current conflict between Saudi Arabia and Libya and the role of the AL to this effect, Moussa announced that the "Arab League carried out a role in this regard and I briefed President Butaflika of what we have done." Moussa described relations between the AL and Algeria as "positive" and rejected all "sayings campaigned by certain media on the existence of differences in preparations for this summit," noting this is "not considered serious and will not obstruct preparations for the summit."
The AL chief said that reform of the AL requires "reform in the Arab states concerning the realization of democracy and transparency and making several amendments and necessary developments, founding an Arab parliament and reactivating the social and economic council" of the AL.
