Moussa arrives in Algiers in preparation for the Arab summit
Regional-Algeria, Politics, 1/24/2005

The secretary general of the Arab league (AL) Amr Moussa arrived on Sunday evening in Algiers in the course of preparations for the Arab summit due to be convened in this country on March 22 and 23.

Algerian official sources confirmed that Moussa will discuss with the Algerian foreign minister Abdul Aziz Balkhadem latest preparations for the forthcoming summit. The two men will also discuss conditions in Iraq and Palestine, noting that Moussa will sign during the visit an agreement to establish a headquarters for the Higher Arab Institute for Translation in Algiers.

Algeria's summit which is expected to study AL reform prospects was at the center of the meetings of the Arab foreign ministers which was hosted by Cairo earlier this month.

Then, the ministers approved a draft project stated to form a provisional Arab parliament and an authority to follow up the implementation of the summit's resolutions and changing the mechanism of voting on decisions.

According to the project, this provisional parliament which will pave the way to establish a permanent Arab parliament will be composed of 4 parliamentarians from each Arab state and will have Damascus as a headquarters. The follow up committee will be assigned to "remind" the member states of their duties concerning AL decisions.
