Khartoum accuses Darfur rebels of killing scores of civilians
Sudan, Politics, 1/24/2005

An official in the Sudanese army said a group of Darfur rebels killed scores of Sudanese and injured others in an attack against villages in al-Malam area to the north of Darfur.

The official explained that rebel groups robbed properties and burnt 8 villages in the area which is situated between the two districts of south and north Darfur. But the official did not specify which of the two rebel forces carried out the attack.

The spokesman for al-Adel Wal-Musawat movement denied the involvement of the movement's forces in the attack. He said he seeks to get information concerning developments in al-Malam area. Also, the Sudan Liberation Army denied its forces to have have launched an attack in that area.

There are three main rebel groups in Darfur, but other groups are active in the region. A matter which makes it difficult to know who is responsible for launching the attacks.

The Khartoum government and the rebel movements are exchanging accusations over violating the ceasefire agreement. The dispute over this issue resulted in the failure of a round of peace talks in December 2004 in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

On Saturday, South Africa announced dispatching one police force squad to support the forces of the African Union which assumes the monitoring of the cease fire in Darfur. The African Union complains of its inability to send 3,000 extra soldiers to Darfur because of the lack of logistic and financial resources.

Nigeria also decided to send 50 soldiers to enhance the forces of the African Union in the district which the UN says is not enough, besides the deployment process of these forces proceed slowly.
