Poor participation of Iraqis in the Diaspora in the elections
Iraq, Politics, 1/24/2005
The International Organization for Migration said on Sunday, that Iraqis living outside Iraq are not enthusiastic to take part in the elections. This assumption is built on the number of voters registered so far whose number are scores of times less than what has been expected.
For its part, the interim Iraqi government announced more security measures in order to withstand expected attacks targeting the legislative elections and the election of 18 local councils. Britain decided to send new military reinforcements to Iraq of 400 soldiers in order to enhance the security forces during the election period.
Concerning the local councils elections, the Muslim Scholars Commission denied on Sunday its participation in the elections of the council of Deyali governorate due on January 30th. The commission described the statement of the public relations department at the interim cabinet concerning its participation in the local elections as a damaging distortion of the position of forces which reject the current timing of the elections.
The spokesman for the Iraqi Islamic party on Saturday announced that his party and the commission will not taking part in the local councils elections and confirming continued boycott of the legislative elections which will be held the same day.
