Russia criticizes the American accusations against Syria
Syria-Russia, Politics, 1/22/2005
Russia has strongly defended Syria in confrontations of the American accusations which link it to what is called terrorism. It described these accusations as futile and damaging a lot to security in the Middle East.
The spokesman for the Russian Foreign ministry Alexander Yakovinko said that attaching traits to countries and describing certain states unilaterally as being part of what Washington described as the "Axis of evil" has not resulted on the improvement of security for any side, stressing that Syria is one of the key players in the region and the resumption of its talks with Israel is important in the course of the ME peace process.
This Russian criticism came several days from warning made by the US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice to Syria to that it might face new sanctions over accusations addressed to it of interfering in Iraq and its relations with what she called terrorism. It also came on the fall of an expected visit by the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to Moscow.
In the same context, Israeli political sources said on Thursday that the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon urged the Russian President Vladmir Putin in a telephone call not to sell weapons to Syria of fears that this will lead to enhancing the potentials of the Hizbullah party. The sources said that Putin did not respond to the call made by Sharon, though Moscow had denied any plans to sell anti-plane missiles to Damascus.
