Israel threatens, Palestinian authority starts security missions in Gaza
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 1/22/2005

Israel threatened to direct what it called tough military attacks against the Palestinians if Palestinian resistance attacks continue.

Israel's deputy defense minister Zaef Bobum said that the Israeli occupation forces in Gaza are in a state of alert after receiving instructions to launch a military attack if the Palestinian authority fails to meet its obligations to stop the attacks.

In statements to the Israeli radio, Bobum explained that Tel Aviv agreed to the deployment of Palestinian security forces in the north of Gaza on the hope to achieving a positive development to the bombardment by al-Qassam missiles and mortars shelling.

Hundreds of Palestinian national security men started with their weapons the mission of keeping security in the areas of northern Gaza where they were deployed in Beit Hanoun, Beit Lahia and the surrounding areas, in the framework of the agreement between the Palestinian and Israeli sides following the resumption of their security contacts.

The volume of this force is expected to reach 3,000 men carrying out a mission which is considered the first of its kind since the eruption of the Palestinian Intifada in 2000. The Israeli army had targeted during its military operations during recent years the security departments of the Palestinian authority under the allegations of the involvement of its members of planning for resistance attacks.

The statement issued by the Palestinian presidency stressed the completion of the first phase of the security plan to deploy the security forces to the north of Gaza. the second phase will be completed within two days during which army officers will be deployed in Gaza and the expansion of the Palestinian security presence to the south of the sector.

The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas continued in Gaza with leaders of the Palestinian groups the dialogue to convince them on the credibility of ceasing fire with Israel.

In statements following Friday's prayers, Abbas said that dialogue is serious and is taking a positive inclination. He refused to predict the possibility of reaching results shortly. He explained that the Palestinian security forces in Gaza will also protect the Palestinian area against any aggression, as he alleged.

One Israeli woman died on Friday because of her wounds she had last Saturday when one al-Qassam missile was fired from Gaza against the Israeli Sdeirout settlement.
