Sudanese investigation discloses violations in Darfur, denies genocide
Sudan, Politics, 1/21/2005
Sudanese official investigation committee disclosed violations of human rights in Darfur district, in the west of Sudan, but denied the occurrence of ethnic cleansing or any collective rape operations.
In its report, the committee said that "grave violations of human rights were committed in the three states of Darfur, in which all sides of the conflict at various levels took place."
The committee indicated that these violations resulted in causing sufferings for the people and their displacement to neighboring states like Chad.
The committee explained that what is taking place in darfur is not at any rate similar to the operations of genocide that took place in Rwanda, Bosnia or Kampuchea, and rape cases did not take place on a large scale.
The report said that the number of killing in the line of the police and the army does not exceed several thousands in contrary to what was stated in international reports and the mass media which talked about 70,000 death. The committee stressed that the regular army and the rebels attacked and bombarded areas where civilians believed that opposers to them were staying in.
