Akef: Jamal Mubarak will assume presidency
Egypt, Politics, 1/19/2005
The general guide of the Muslim Brothers group in Egypt, Muhammad Mahdi Akef, said he expects the son of President Hosni Mubarak, Jamal, will be the president of the country but not at this time.
Akef said he expects the people's council ( parliamen) which is dominated by the national party will nominate President Mubarak (76 year old) in May for a fifth presidential term of office for six years. He added "President Hosni Mubarak seizes all the state affairs in his hand, the executive and legislative authorities, alike." He added "we are in a police state governed by one man."
Akef added "when they want to bring him ( Jamal), they will, as long as there is an emergency law, party laws, prisoners and violations of human rights -- they can do anything."
For his part, the spokesman for the Egyptian government Majdi Radi confirmed statements made by the prime minister Ahmad Nazif on Monday in which he said he finds no problem in Jamal's assumption of the presidency. He told journalists "the prime minister said: I do not see any reason preventing Jamal Mubarak from becoming a president. I do think he is an ambitious Egyptian man." Radi added quoting Nazif statements to the Egyptian news agency "Jamal Mubarak has a remarkable character in his work in the National Democratic party." He continued "he achieved great credibility" during his work.
