Demonstrations in Algeria following the increase in gas prices
Algeria, Politics, 1/19/2005

News reports in Algeria said on Wednesday that areas in the southern part of the country and al-Kbyle area witnessed violent demonstration because of the increase of the gas prices by the government.

Angry young men stole and burnt public buildings in Bberein in al-Jelfa quarters, while Kharatta citizens in the small Kbyle area had demonstrations in which they blocked the road leading to Bajjaya city.

The police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators and detained many of them. The government decided to increase the price of each gas cylinder despite the opposition of the national people's council ( parliament) as its price increased from 170 Algeian Dinars to 200 dinars. The increase coincides with winter season when there is a peak in gas demand.
