Nazif opens Um el Masryeen - Muneeb underground metro
Egypt, Local, 1/18/2005

Prime Minister Dr Ahmed Nazif yesterday inaugurated the fifth phase of Line 2 of the Greater Cairo underground metro. The fifth phase links Um El Masryeen to El Muneeb in Giza.

The purpose of new underground stops to facilitate the Government's development project, in order to improve the quality of services offered to the people, Nazif told reporters, after initiating the new 2.6km-long fifth phase extension to the southern end of Line 2.

Meanwhile, the Government has completed the feasibility studies for Line 3 of the system, the first phase of which will run from Abbasiya to Ataba, the Prime Minister explained, adding that tenders for implementing this project will be announced soon.

Line 3, to be built in four phases, will eventually run all the way from Cairo International airport to Imbaba, with a total length of 34.2km.

The Government has kept the prices of underground tickets very cheap, out of consideration for low-income brackets, despite the rising operational costs of this vital service, used by 2 million computers every day, the PM said.
