Al-Shara confers with UN special envoy the situation in Iraq
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 1/17/2005
Syria's Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara and the UN Secretary General's Special Representative in Iraq Ashraf Qaddi discussed on Sunday latest developments in Iraq and ways of helping the Iraqi people find an outlet for his current ordeal.
In this regard, al-Shara affirmed the necessity of the UN to assume an active role in Iraq in a way that meets the Iraqi people's aspirations for independence, freedom, and for managing their own affairs.
He hoped the forthcoming elections would be held with a full Iraqi participation to form the main step for Iraqis to realize their aspirations.
"Syria is an important neighbor to Iraq and ties between the two nations are historical and strong so I highly appreciate the deepest understanding that I may get from Syrian officials over the Iraqi situation in a way that serves the region and Iraq's interest," Qaddi told reporters following the meeting.
He valued Syria's efforts to make the forthcoming Iraqi elections a success hailing Syria's positive stance towards the UN role in those elections scheduled to be held at the end of this month.
He pointed out that the UN is satisfied that Iraqis have a strong will to overcome the ordeal and difficulties facing them, stressing the significance of a full Iraqi participation in the forthcoming elections with the aim of achieving the Iraqis' goals and interests in a peaceful way.
