Attacks in Musil, demonstrations in Baghdad
Iraq, Military, 1/17/2005

The American forces launched various attacks in Musil city to the north of Iraq that resulted in detaining 11 persons suspected to be members of the armed groups, who stand against the foreign presence in Iraq.

A statement for the American army, which increased the number of its forces in Musil, said that the attacks aim at enhancing security in this rioted city before the fall of the legislative elections set by the end of January. The statement added that the number of detainees in Musil reached 132 persons since the beginning of the current month.

In another statement, the American army said that the Iraqi army detained seven suspected persons near Baqouba city to the north east of Baghdad in an operation by the Iraqi soldiers and covered breaking into some 50 houses and a flat near the city.

This came after one Iraqi was killed and two others injured in an explosion targeting one American procession in Abu Ghreib area to the west of Baghdad. In Karkouk, a policeman was killed and other four injured in an attack launched by unidentified men against the police center to the southern west of the city.

In Irbil to the north of Iraq seven persons were at least killed in a booby trapped car explosion near the headquarters of the local parliament following the end of a meeting between the two Kurdish leaders Jalal al-Talibani and Masoud al-Barazani over the elections. However, a spokesman for the Kurdistani democratic party stressed that the explosion resulted from a shelling and had no material nor human casualties.

In Baghdad, the Iraqi police found the bodies of four Iraqis working with foreign companies near al-Kout to the south of Baghdad, while the American forces found the body of the fifth thrown in a river to the north of Baghdad.

Near the ministries of oil and electricity in the downtown of Baghdad, hundreds of the supporters of the Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sader demonstrated in protest of the escalation of the fuel and electricity crisis in the country. The demonstrators called for the return back of electricity to its situation as before and solving the fuel crisis. Demonstrators said that a three day sit-in will follow the demonstration in front of a gate of the building of the Iraqi ministries.
