IER delegation visits old detention center in Casablanca
Morocco, Politics, 1/15/2005
A delegation of the Justice and Reconciliation commission (IER), an official body set up last January to seek out-of-court settlement of past human rights abuses, paid on Friday a visit to the old detention center of Derb Moulay Cherif, in Casablanca.
The visit of the delegation, headed by Driss benzekri, IER chairman, is part the programme of investigations conducted by this body, created to shed light on past violations of human rights that happened in Morocco between 1956 and 1999 and assess the magnitude and incidence of the violations.
The IER intends to locate and inspect illegal detention centers as well as those used for secret detention so as to make appropriate decisions on the centers, in cooperation with public powers.
The Friday field visit and upcoming ones are made in the morrow of public audiences on past human rights violations, held last December 21 and 22. The sessions will resume in the coming days.
