Palestine-Israel, Politics, 1/15/2005
Elected President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, said that al-Mintar crossing attack operation in Gaza which resulted in killing 6 Israelis and nine Palestinians by Israelis this week does not serve the peace process.
Abu Mazin who also assumes the presidency of the PLO executive committee also stressed his cling to the peace process, noting that he will start contacts with the Israeli side during the two coming weeks after the formation of the Palestinian government.
This was coincided with statements in which each of the official spokesman for the Palestinian authority Nabil Abu Rudinah and the negotiations affairs minister in the Palestinian authority Saeb Oreikat and the secretary general of the Palestinian general security Abdul Razzaq al-Maheydah said that the only way to stop violence in the region is the reciprocated ceasefire between the Israeli and Palestinian sides.
The Islamic resistance movement said that al-Mintar operation does not constitute a message to the Palestinian Authority nor to its President Mahmoud Abbas, nor closes the door of dialogue among the Palestinians.
One of Hamas's leading figures in the West bank Sheikh Hassan Youssef said that this operation is for self- defense in confrontation of the Israeli escalation and the policy of assassination and incursions.
Meantime, thousands of Palestinians demonstrated in Jabalia camp to the north of Gaza on Friday at the invitation of Hamas movement celebrating al-Mintar crossing operation and its executors.
The Israeli occupation forces closed Beit Hanoun crossing ( Eres) to the north of Gaza, which is dedicated for important individuals, figures and journalists between Gaza and Israel, following the operation.
The Israeli forces had closed al-Mintar ( Carney ) crossing for goods in the downtown of Gaza immediately after the operation on Thursday. The third crossing which is Rafah to the south of Gaza is closed since five weeks following the Palestinian operation which targeted it and resulted in killing five Israeli soldiers.
