Al-Shara: news against Syria over Iraq are misleading
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 1/14/2005

Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara on Thursday rejected media misleading news against Syria over Iraq saying they are baseless.

"Syria is interested in Iraq's future and security because it is part of Syria's security and what some media is saying of misinformation is fiction as it is baseless," al-Shara told a joint news conference with Italian counterpart Gianfranco Fini.

Al-Shara said Syria has shown great cooperation with Iraq in the field of keeping security and stability noting to the importance of the political process and the need of comprehensive elections including the participation of all Iraqis in various regions since it is the only way to grant the future government full legitimacy which is "more important than any foreign legitimacy."

On the Middle East peace process, Shara held Israel responsibility for peace efforts failure stressing at the same time that "Syria's hand will remain stretched out for peace." "Israel is responsible for blocking all efforts exerted to make peace and published writings of many US officials who are involved in this subject have confirmed that, yet Syria's hand remains extended to peace," he said.

Speaking about "rumors" of Russian weapons exports to Syria, al-Shara expressed regret over the "fabrication of such news" noting that it was a proof of prefabricated antagonist campaigns that begin before the event. "This is similar to accusations related to Iraq and you know now who is the source behind all this and who is interfering in the inferior affairs of other sates," he said.

Fini, for his part called to seize the available opportunity to re-inject momentum in the Mideast peace process pointing out at the significance of achieving the just and comprehensive peace on all tracks including the Syrian and Lebanese tracks.

The Italian Foreign Minster stressed the role the international community should play particularly the EU and the USA to achieve the just and comprehensive peace that would restore the occupied lands because "it is the only way to destroy terror." Shara and Fini said the meeting of the Italian FM with President Bashr al-Assad this morning was good and constructive and held in cordial atmospheres.
