Three American soldiers killed in Iraq, Powell fears expansion of resistance
Iraq-USA, Politics, 1/14/2005
A statement by the American army said that two American soldiers were killed in military operations in al-Anbar governorate in the west of Iraq.
The statement said that the two soldiers were killed on Thursday while carrying out peace and stability missions in the governorate, giving no further details. The statement explained it does not want to disclose information that gunmen would make use of, adding that they are launching daily attacks against the forces led by the US in Iraq.
Disclosing the killing of the two soldiers came following the announcement of another American soldier in a land mine explosion as his vehicle was running in Palestine street in Musil city to the north of Iraq on Thursday.
Because the American forces have been exposed to daily attacks and the approaching date of the elections and the continued security deterioration, the American military leadership decided to double the number of its helicopters in northern Iraq and increase the number of its soldiers in the governorates of Salah Eddine, Deyali and al-Ta'mim to 25,000 in order to help men of the 42,000 Iraqi security men to maintain control on these governorates.
For its part, Georgia defense ministry decided to postpone sending more soldiers to Iraq until February, under the pretext that the postponement is attributed to technical reasons.
In this context, the US secretary of state Colin Powell expressed his fear that the Israeli resistance will increase before the elections which are due to be held by the end of January. Powell considered that resistance will not disappear because of the elections, noting that the resistance men might become stronger if they will be able to prevent the Iraqi people from taking part in the elections.
