Palestine-Israel, Military, 1/14/2005
Five Israeli soldiers were killed and other ten were injured and three Palestinian were killed in a Palestinian attack at an Israeli military position in the downtown of Gaza.
Following the operation, the Israeli army radio said that gunmen attacked one military position at al-Mintar crossing ( Carny) which links the sector to Israel and they were killed in the attack.
However, the radio admitted that a large explosion took place at first at the crossing and followed by a clash with Palestinian gunmen who launched missile shelling and this resulted in the large number of killed Israelis and Palestinians.
After that, one Israeli helicopter fired two missiles at the al-Ihsan charity society of the Islamic Jihad movement in Deir al-Balah camp in the downtown of Gaza. News reports in Gaza said that no casualties resulted from the bombardment.
Three Palestinian groups claimed responsibility for al-Mintar operation. They are al-Aqsa group of the Fatah movement which is led by the led Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the Islamic resistance movement ( Hamas) and the Palestine resistance front which includes several resistance groups in Gaza. These groups announced that three Palestinians, with two of them are the executors of the operation were killed in the attack.
This operation came amid the escalation of attacks between the Israeli occupation army and the Palestine resistance movements which refused the call made by Mahmoud Abbas to cease fire of the Intifada which has been continuous since more than 4 years.
The operation took place after one Palestinian was killed on Thursday morning by the bullet of a special Israeli squad of the Israeli army in Beit Lahia to the north of Gaza. News reports in Gaza said the occupation forces detained two Palestinians in the same area.
Earlier news reports said that fire was exchanged between the occupation forces and several Palestinian resistance men at the outskirts of Natsareim settlement to the north of Gaza following the killing and wounding of four Palestinians in a Palestinian operation in which gunmen attacked Morag settlement in Rafah to the south of Gaza.
