Gamal Mubarak: NDP has not yet started nomination of presidential candidate
Egypt, Politics, 1/13/2005

The ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) has not yet started nomination of its candidate to the presidential post, said Gamal Mubarak, NDP chief of the policies committee.

At a meeting with representatives of the NDP from 14 governorates yesterday, Gamal Mubarak said the constitution has set a specific date and procedures to start the nomination and that the president's candidacy is finally a decision that will be taken by himself.

The voter is the side that finally decides the results of the presidential referendum, said Gamal Mubarak, adding that the will of the voter should be respected and that any otherwise claims are nothing but an encroachment on the voter's right.

"The NDP policies Committee has embarked on drawing up the main features of the party's platform for the next parliamentary election," said Gamal Mubarak.

He further elaborated on the draft laws that will be submitted by the NDP to the parliament in its current session, namely the tax law, the parliament regulation bill, the party law, the practice of political rights and expansion of the political participation scope.

Concerning the government's foreign policy, Mubarak said that the national interests and wisdom should be the guidance when the matter concerns political choices and economic cooperation.

Under the current system, the parliament which is dominated by the NDP selects a single candidate by one third. The candidate is then presented for a popular referendum.

President Hosni Mubarak has been in power since 1981, for 6-year terms.
