Security conditions deteriorated in Iraq, government cling to elections date
Iraq, Politics, 1/13/2005

The Interim Iraqi prime minister Eyad Allawi said that the deteriorated security conditions in the country might prevent the elections in certain areas.

The government announced the allocation of $ 2.2 billion from the current year's budget in order to enhance the security forces in order to maintain order during the elections. Allawi said that the new allotted sums will cover the increase in the number of the Iraqi armed forces of 50,000 soldiers to reach 150,000 ones.

With the approaching date of the elections, Allawi discussed with the American President George W. Bush the preparations made by the government to carry out the elections under the current circumstances.

The spokesman for the White House Scott McClellan said that Bush stressed during the telephone call his cling to this political date, noting that Allawi shared with the American president the same view despite the fact he recognized that certain areas in Iraq will not be secure for voters during casting of votes.
