The attacks against oil establishments cost Iraq $ 10 billion
Iraq, Economics, 1/12/2005
The interim Iraqi prime minister Eyad Allawi said on Tuesday that the attacks which targeted the oil and electricity infrastructure in the country cost a total estimated at $ 10 billion.
Allawi added that this figure includes the complete cost of direct and indirect losses resulting from the attacks on the oil and electricity infrastructure since the end of the war in April 2003, but part of these losses is a result of attacks against oil pipelines which are linked to storage areas and attacks on oil tankers which transport fuels to Iraq.
Worthy mentioning that Iraq has resumed oil exports on Saturday after the cut-off of the electricity grid that resulted in halting loading operations from the southern ports for 26 hours.
However, southern Iraq ports are considered the only outlets for the exports of the Iraqi oil. These exports from the north via Turkey are halted since more than 3 weeks because of the attacks against oil installations.
However, the exporting capacity from Basra and Khour al-Amyah ports is 2 million barrels daily.
One Iraqi official said on Monday that Iraq aims at preserving the level of its exports of the light crude oil of Basra this month which is about 1.6 million barrels daily.
However, Iraq's exports of al-Basra crude oil recorded less than 1.6 million barrels daily in December 2004.
