Algeria-Egypt, Politics, 1/11/2005
The Algerian foreign minister Abdul Aziz Balkhadem announced that his country is maintaining "very good relations " with Egypt, describing the secretary general of the Arab League as a friend.
The Algerian ambassador in Cairo and its representative to the Arab League Abdul Qader Hajjar stressed that his country's proposal to have a "rotating " post for the AL presidency is not directed against Egypt nor against the person of the current secretary general of the Arab League." Balkhadem said, in remarks to the current controversy on the term of office of the AL secretary general and the connection with the Egyptian diplomacy that it was not meant "in any way to damage the current secretary of the Arab league nor to the relations between Algeria and Egypt which are very good relations."
He added all had been said in the Egyptian media have no grounds on Algeria's previous nor current position concerning Amr Moussa who is a friend, nor the Egyptian people who are brothers to the people of Algeria." The Algerian ambassador told journalists on the sidelines of the preliminary meeting at the level of permanent representatives for the special session of the Arab foreign ministers to be held in Cairo tomorrow Wednesday and Thursday to discuss restructuring of the Arab league that his country "gave its opinions to amending the Arab league charter which is so far 60 year old and it is debated so it will be either accepted ( the Algerian proposal ) or rejected," noting that Balkhadem will be meeting with President Mubarak today and will convey him a message from his Algerian counterpart Abdul Aziz Butaflika.
