UN calls for self control in south Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 1/11/2005

The UN has called for self- control in south Lebanon following the confrontations which led on Sunday to killing one Israeli army officer and one French UNIFIL officer in addition to one member of the Hizbullah party.

The representative for the UN secretary general in South Lebanon Stevan De Mistora said that Lebanon in particular and the region in general are in a critical condition and the nature of developments taking place in the region requires easing down rather than escalation.

Mistora's call came following his meeting with the Lebanese foreign minister Mahmoud Hammoud to discuss developments resulted from a bomb explosion in which one Israeli officer was killed and three others injured in Shebaa farms. The explosion also resulted in an Israeli reaction reflected in bombarding four villages and targeting Hizbullah position also resulted in killing one Hizbullah party member and injuring the other.

The bombardment made by an Israeli tank resulted in destroying one car for UNFIL and the killing of one French officer and injuring one Swedish and one Lebanese.

A senior Israeli army officer visited the area for investigation admitted that Israeli fires were responsible for the killing of the French officer, but he said it was not possible to know that the target was UN soldiers; claiming that the car they were riding was not carrying the UN emblem.

However, a UN official said that the victims were in an ordinary patrol and their car was marked by the UN emblem. Lebanese security officials stressed the victims were wearing the UN uniforms and raising its flags.
