Abbas is officially president for the Palestinian authority

The Palestinian central elections committee announced the winning of the candidate of the Fatah movement and chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization Mahmoud Abbas, officially in the presidential elections which took place on Sunday.

The next person in the elections, the independent candidate Mustafa al-Barghouthi ( 51 year old), received 19.80% of the votes. Then came third the candidate of the democratic front for the liberation of Palestine Tayser Khalef who won 3.5% of the votes and the candidate of the Palestinian people party ( former communist party) by 2.69% of the votes.

However, Abdul halim al-Ashqar, the independent Islamic candidate who was put under home arrest in the USA got 2.68%, the independent Islamic candidate Sayed Barakah got 1.27% of the votes and the independent candidate Abdul Karim Shbeir got 0.67% of the votes.
