GSU and PPP pledge to combine efforts to find a way out to Sahara issue
Morocco, Politics, 1/10/2005
The United socialist left (GSU) and the party of progress and socialism (PPS) agreed to combine efforts to find a political solution to the Sahara issue "through a democratic management" respecting Morocco's sovereignty over its Southern provinces, a press release said at the end of a meeting in Casablanca of the political bureaus of the two Moroccan political parties.
The two parties said the solution should grant a large autonomy to the territory population to run their affairs in the framework of an integrated regionalisation policy, stressing the need to mobilise all national potentials to defend Moroccan territorial integrity.
The GSU and PPS also underscored the importance to find a way out to the issue that "spare the region instability dangers" and voiced willingness to join efforts regarding the Sebta and Mellilia and nearby islands dossier to reach a normal solution to them. The two Moroccan Northern towns, called presidios, and some Moroccan Islands are still under Spanish rule.
The Sahara conflict erupted in 1975 when Morocco retrieved its Southern provinces from Spain under a tripartite accord signed by the two countries along with Mauritania. Since then, the Algeria created and backed Polisario has been claiming the separation of the territory from its motherland.
The GSU and PPS meeting dealt with other issues, including the bill on political parties, the promotion of friendship and cooperation ties with other peoples to face globalisation, support to the Palestinian people to create a state, the creation of a united socialist party, sex equality and the development of an open.
