UN admits the killing of a French officer in south Lebanon by Israeli bullets
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 1/10/2005

UNIFIL (the United Nations Interim Forces In South Lebanon) stressed yesterday the killing of one French officer working in the truce committee by the Israeli bullets. This was expressed in conclusion of a series of field developments that covered the killing of one Israeli and injuring other three.

The spokesman for the UNIFIL Milos Srojer said that one French observer was killed and one Swede and their Lebanese driver were injured by bullets from the Israeli side of the Blue line which constitutes the border between Lebanon and Israel.

A statement issued by UNIFIL said that investigations were opened to know the implications of what it described as a catastrophic incident.

While a spokeswoman for the Israeli army said that a plane bombarded areas known to be used by the Hizbullah party in its attacks, a later statement was issued admitting the killing of one officer. For its part, Hizbullah admitted that one of its men was killed as a result of the Israeli bombardment.

For its part, Lebanese security sources said that the Israeli army fired artillery shelling at houses near Shebaa farms and that military helicopters bombarded streets along the borders and hit a school situated near Kafer Kala town.

Earlier news reports said that one explosive went off in an Israeli patrol and this resulted in killing the officer and wounding three soldiers.

The Hizbullah al-Manar TV said that the party fighters detonated one explosive when one armored Israeli vehicle of Hummer type was running near Zibdin in Shebaa farms and that four Apache planes interfered to evacuate the victims.

One official in the Hizbullah party in south Lebanon Nabil Qaouq said in a statement to the Qatari al-Jazeera TV that the killed Israeli officer is the leader of Zibdin squad.
