Mubarak continues reconciliation efforts between Libya, Saudi Arabia
Egypt-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 1/6/2005
An Egyptian diplomatic source stressed that the visit held by President Hosni Mubarak to Saudi Arabia aimed at ending the disputes between Riyadh and Tripoli over an alleged conspiracy to assassinate the Saudi crown prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz.
Egypt s ambassador to the Kingdom, Muhammad Qasem, said that Mubarak "called on Libya to continue halting reciprocated media criticism," noting that talks dealt in particular with means of "purifying inter- Arab relations."
On the other hand, the US stressed that Tripoli has not answered yet inquiries over the alleged conspiracy describing it as an obstacle to removing Libya's name from the American list of countries sponsoring terrorism as well as lifting sanctions from it.
However, despite all mediations that took place, the Libyan leader Muammar al-Qathafi stressed earlier that his country is not in need for mediation between his country and Saudi Arabia.
Worthy mentioning that that media of the states involved launched media attacks since December, 2004 when Saudi Arabia decided to withdraw its ambassador from Tripoli and asked Libya to withdraw its ambassador, for its part, from the Kingdom because of what it described the assassination conspiracy.
Several months ago, the American " New York Times" published allegations that the Libyan intelligence in 2004 carried out an assassination attempt targeted the Saudi crown prince Abdullah.
The paper mentioned two names of the men who made the attempt. They are the American of Eritrean origin Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi, who is held in Washington and the Libyan intelligence officer Muhammad Ismael who is held by the Saudi authorities. N.
