Sherif: The year of democratic reforms in Egyt
Egypt, Politics, 1/5/2005

This year will be the year of democratic reforms and the continuation of inter-party dialogue, Egypt's Chairman of the Shura Council, Mofied Shehab and Secretary -General of the ruling National Democratic Party Safwat el-Sherif said yesterday.

Safwat el-Sherif told a meeting with members of the Lions Club that socio-economic and political life in Egypt has improved thanks to the comprehensive reforms launched by President Mubarak.

He reminded participants at the gathering held to honour senior members of the Lions Club, that the Presidential referendum is scheduled for September and that the parliamentary elections are due in November.

Although the Egyptian Constitution is one of the best constitutions in the world, El-Sherif said, it might require certain amendments to meet the changing circumstances of the 21st Century.

He added that the days of the one-party system in Egypt are over, as the nation has espoused the principle of political pluralism and fair competition among the available political parties.

El-Sherif also stressed that the NDP and the Government welcome serious and constructive dialogue with all the legally established parties.

The NDP, he added, has fulfilled all its commitments and left the door wide open for dialogue with all parties, which should follow its example of respecting others' views and opinions.
