President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt has started a visit to Saudi Arabia on which Egyptian officials said came in the course of Egyptian and Arab efforts to settle the tension between the Kingdom and Libya, reached the situation of cutting diplomatic relations between the two sides.

Mubarak will be meeting during his visit which lasted for several hours the Saudi crown prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz who had welcomed him upon his arrival in Riyadh airport. The Egyptian president is accompanied in this mission by his foreign minister Ahmad Abu al-Gheit and his political advisor Osama al-Baz as well as the director of the intelligence Lt. gen. Suleiman had visited Riyadh on December 26. 004 in an attempt to ease down the crisis between Saudi Arabia and Libya. Cairo said that Suleiman's move was crowned by the two states' consent to halt reciprocated media attacks.

The secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa carried out a series of contacts with the Saudi and Libyan foreign ministers and several Arab ministers in order to contain the crisis between Tripoli and Riyadh.

Despite these attempts, the Libyan leader Muammar al-Qathafi said that his country is not in need to mediation to fix relations with Saudi Arabia.

Worthy mentioning that tension between the two sides reached its peak when Riyadh announced on December 22nd the withdrawal of its ambassador from Tripoli and the expulsion of the Libyan ambassador from Riyadh on the background of accusations to Libya of being involved in a conspiracy to assassinate crown prince Abdullah. Libya had repeatedly denied these accusations.
