Lahoud holds talks with Chinese official

President Emile Lahoud of Lebanon on Monday expressed hope that the superpowers be committed to implementing the international resolutions to achieve peace and security in the world.

President Lahoud, meeting Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Lui Qua Tsing, praised Beijing for its efforts to back Lebanon, defend the Palestinian cause and achieve the just and comprehensive peace based on the UN relevant resolutions.

He held Israel responsible for hindering international efforts to resume peace negotiations, adding that Israel's Ariel Sharon seeks to exploit the ongoing circumstances to continue "his expansionist policy."

The Chinese official, for his part, stressed importance of resuming peace negotiations on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks to achieve the just and comprehensive peace in the region.

Meantime, "Peace negotiations should be resumed on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks, as soon as possible, as the two tracks are considered the most important ones in the peace process," a Chinese delegation led by Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Lui said in a statement following talks with Lebanese Premier Omar Karami.

The statement called on Israel to put an end to its practices against the Palestinian people, ensure smooth holding of the Palestinian elections, improve the human conditions in the occupied Palestinian lands and implement the relevant UN resolutions.

It appealed to the international community to take tangible and effective steps to guarantee the process of Palestinian elections and to back the Palestinian economy.
