Abbas: I want to protect the Palestinian resistance from Israel
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 1/3/2005
In statements observers linked to the elections campaign, chairman of the PLO executive committee Mahmoud Abbas defended his appearance recently during his election campaign with members of resistance forces in Gaza to that he wants to protect members of the Palestinian resistance from Israel.
In a press statement, Abbas explained that it is his duty to protect resistance men from assassination operations and killing and all forms of aggressions they are exposed to so as to reciprocate favors to the resistance's welcome to his candidacy.
Abbas considered that it is not acceptable to keep these resistance men chased or wanted, defending thereby his policy to dismantle the resistance weapons via peaceful means.
Despite these statements, Abbas renewed in other press statements his confirmation on the need to end the militarization of the Intifada but he explained that this means "ending the disorder of weapons," noting that all matters will be solved through dialogue and the sense of responsibility.
The candidate of the Palestine National Liberation Front ( Fatah) stressed he will not permit "inter- Palestinian fighting," considering that inter-Palestinian fighting is a red line that would not be crossed. By his call, to end the militarization of the Intifada, Abu Mazin provoked the opposition of the Palestinian resistance including al-Aqsa martyrs of the Fatah movement.
On Saturday, Abbas was warmly welcomed by thousands of Palestinians in Rafah to the south of Gaza. In a massive celebration on the occasion of the 40th foundation anniversary of launching Fatah, Abu mazin deplored the Israeli aggression against Gaza.
Abbas who continued his election campaign accused Israel of placing obstacles before the Palestinian elections and held it responsible for the escalation in Gaza.
For his part, the Palestinian prime minister Ahmad Qurei accused Israel of working to "undermine the Palestinian elections through the military campaign it launches against the Palestinians in Gaza.
