Lebanese Foreign Minister, Qabalan and Syria's role in Lebanon
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 1/1/2005

Lebanese Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud stressed that Syria has protected Lebanon and helped it in the most critical stages of its modern history, pointing out that stability in his country is the result of Syria's care for Lebanon's unity and freedom.

In a statement on Friday, Hammoud stressed the necessity of achieving just and comprehensive peace which is based on the international resolutions, land-for-peace formula, "Madrid terms of reference" and the Arab peace initiative approved by Beirut Summit. He also called on the international community to stop the Israeli occupation and its violation of the international legitimacy.

Meantime, "Syria's pan-Arab role in Lebanon has helped in liberating the Lebanese lands from the Israeli occupation and achieving stability in it," Deputy Chairman of the Islamic Shiite Higher Council in Lebanon, Abdul Amir Qabalan said.

In the Friday's Sermon, Qabalan pointed out that Syria, the "sisterly" state to Lebanon, is close to all Lebanese; it defended them and protected Lebanon from partition.

He called on all Lebanese to confront all the existing challenges surrounding them in a wise manner that reflects their "sincere national nature."
