Illegal migrants cross Southern Algeria to reach Morocco, says researchers
Morocco-Algeria, Local, 12/31/2004

Illegal migrants from sub-Saharan countries use the Algerian territory to reach Moroccan eastern borders in their clandestine trip to Europe, according to abstracts of a book published by French "Libˇration" daily.

The book, titled "Odyssee moderne" (modern odyssey) by Sarah Caron and Isabelle Foug¸res, traces the itinerary used by sub-Saharan illegal migrants from southern to northern Algeria until the Moroccan eastern borders.

Coming from Niger, Mali or Nigeria, these candidates to illegal migration cross the Algerian cities and localities of Tamanrasset, Djanet, In-Salah, Ouargla and Gardaia, say the book authors who made the trip with groups of them.

Photos taken by Sarah Caron who spent five months on the road show sub-saharan nationals stranded in the desert with small quantities of water on their way to the first stop of Tamnrasset where popular restaurants serve them food supplies.

In Djanet, they meet another human trafficker who take them northward, before other traffickers take them over and lead them to the borders with Morocco.

Testimonies published by participants in this risky trip show that Algerian authorities do nothing to prevent them from infiltrating the Moroccan territory.

Several of them who hold Algerian stay visas were gathered and put in military trucks that leave them on the Moroccan-Algerian borders, they recount.

Most of them have travelled on foot and are forced to stay for several months in Algeria where, they say, they were hired in farms in exchange for salaries that are most of the time inferior to the minimum wage in force in Algeria.
