Egypt: One persons is killed between the Copts and Muslims
Egypt, Politics, 12/31/2004
The Egyptian police announce yesterday that one Muslim was killed during confrontations between Muslim youths and Copts in Upper Egypt on Wednesday.
The police explained that young Muslims suspected that young Copts want to demolish a house in order to build a church in al-Menya governorate to the south of Cairo and a clash took place by stones and sticks. Witnesses also reports hearing fire clashes.
The police indicated that the Copts vowed earlier not to convert the house into a church, but to celebrate the masses in the church situated near their town. The police explained that the number of Copts does not even reach 500 out of 20,000 of the total number of population.
On the other hand, the Egyptian attorney general announced the release of a new group of 10 Copts out of 34 that took part in demonstrations by the beginning of December in front of a Cathedral in Cairo, because of their young age. Worthy mentioning that 13 of the detainees were released last week on the ground that the others will be freed before the Christmas which the Copts celebrate on January 7th.
