Palestinian's people's front supports Mustafa al-Barghouthi, Israel obstructs movement of candidates
Palestine, Politics, 12/30/2004

The People's Front For the Liberation of Palestine on Wednesday called on all its cadres and supporters to back Mustafa al-Barghouthi, the independent candidate for the Palestinian presidential elections, due on January, 2005.

This call came by member of the front's political bureau, Rabah Muhanna, in a press conference held in Gaza in which he urged the supporters of the front to vote for al-Barghouthi and back the "democratic unionist option, the resistance attitude and standing against projects of liquidating the Palestine cause."

The front's leading figure Ahmad Saadat -- said from his prison in Areiha -- said that the decision to support al-Barghouthi comes as a result of the failure of the Palestine leftist forces on having an agreement on one candidate to represent the left trend.

The People's Front For The Liberation of Palestine decided not to take part in the elections because of what it described "the deceive of the Palestinian authority and the legislative council in carrying out promises agreed upon concerning amending the legislative elections law." Several observers consider that al-Barghouthi who presides over the "Palestinian national initiative" is the strongest of the 8 candidates in challenging the chairman of the PLO Mahmoud Abbas, the strongest candidate in these elections.
