Morocco signs Arab human rights charter
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 12/29/2004

Morocco signed on Monday the Arab human rights charter approved by the Arab summit held in Tunis last May.

Morocco was keen on being among the first countries to join the charter, given the achievements accomplished by the kingdom in human rights, as they are universally recognized, said Morocco's ambassador to Egypt and permanent delegate to the Arab league, Mohamed Faraj Doukkali.

He also recalled that the document was prepared by the Arab standing committee of human rights, chaired by Morocco's Khalid Naciri who was re-elected some weeks ago to a third term.

The Arab charter, consecrating principles of the United Nations germane charter, of the universal human rights declaration and two international covenants of civil and political rights and of economic, social and cultural rights, seeks to make of human rights in the Arab world a top national concern.

It guarantees to all individuals, men and women, the enjoyment of rights and freedoms without distinction of race, color, sex, language, religion, national or social origin, wealth or any other consideration.

It also consecrates the right of each individual to freedom of religion, thought and opinion as well as the right to practice their religion and perform rites and education without harming others rights and guarantees the rights of minorities to enjoy their culture and their religion and perform their rites.
