Modernization policy in Syria is based on political and economic reform

Syria's Prime Minister Mohammed Naji Otari on Monday evening said the strategy of modernization and development followed by Syria under the leadership of President Basahr al-Assad is based on political as well as economic and administrative reform.

"The strategy is based on the banking, currency and finance reforms as well the rehabilitation of the industrial sector in addition to the reform in the fields of education, culture and information," the Premier told the periodical meeting of the National Progressive Front (NPF).

Otari highlighted what the Syrian economy has "Positive Components," and points of strength, alluding to measures adopted by the government on the level of maintaining new economic policies and the results fulfilled through the increase of investment projects.

He pointed out that the investment projects have reached at SP 200 billion in 2004 while the Gross Domestic Product GDP increased by 3% at the same time, there was a drop in the population growth average to 2.5 percent.

Otari said the unemployment was stable while the Arab and foreign tourists soared to 15% in comparison with the 2003 and Syria widened the scope of economic ties with many states, boards and international economic parties.

He depicted 2004 as a distinguished year in the economic development in facing the great requirements against the society and economy with the gradual integration in the international economy.

"This is possible through the independence of all social and economic forces of the society and the cementing of the democratic inclination embodied in making all take part in the process of development via a three-party economic side, namely, the public, private and the joint sectors," he noted.
