Bush signs draft law imposing sanctions on Sudan
Sudan-USA, Politics, 12/24/2004

The US President George W. Bush signed a new law urging the American government to freeze the assets of the Sudanese government and its officials, over the situation in Darfur.

The law asks the administration of President Bush to help in deploying more forces of the African Union in Darfur and imposing sanctions on Khartoum including banning the travel of its officials, and freezing their assets and assets of affiliated companies for it or for the National Congress Party.

This law which is not considered obligatory, urges President Bush to encourage members of the UN to take similar measures including halting the importation of Sudanese oil.

The law allots a sum of $ 300 million, two thirds of which go to facilitate the deployment of the African Union forces in Darfur, and the other third to facilitate reaching a peace agreement in southern Sudan where the conflict has been continuous since 21 years. These sums will be deducted from other programs, as the new law is limited to allocate the sums but not ensuring them.

Two weeks earlier, the Sudanese government said that the new law does not change any thing since Khartoum is "already under an American political and economic besiege."
