Great turnout for the Palestinian municipal elections, Hamas candidates progressing
Palestine, Politics, 12/24/2004

Preliminary results of the Palestinian municipal elections indicated a progress for the candidates of the Islamic resistance movement (Hamas) in Toulkarem city in the West Bank.

News reports said that the operation of selecting votes in Bal'a area to the east of Toulkarem resulted in the winning of 8 candidates from Hamas in addition to two from Fatah movement and one independent. The news added that a result of selecting 60% of the votes in Kafer al-Labad resulted in the progress of the candidates of "martyr Yasser Arafat" who is close to the Fatah movement.

The process of selecting the votes in the municipal elections started in several Palestinian cities and towns upon announcing the closure of voting centers on Thursday evening after extending the voting time because of the intensive turnout. News reports said that preliminary results will start to be declared as from Friday and official results to be announced tomorrow.

Voters in various parts of the West Bank cast their votes in the first municipal elections since three decades. The voting ballots witnessed great turnout that pushed the committee supervising the elections to extend the time dedicated for ending the vote basically set at 5 p.m. GMT.

Since early hours of yesterday morning, the voters queued before the voting centers. To maintain order, Israel permitted armed Palestinian police members to be available in certain villages and towns situated outside the confines of its control.
