customer the first to profit EU partnership, official
Syria-European Union, Economics, 12/22/2004

Syria's Customs Director General Asel Sannoufa on Tuesday underlined that the first and last beneficiary from the Syrian-European Association Accord was the Syrian consumer.

In an interview with al-Thawara newspaper, Sannoufa said this partnership would allow a kind of real competition that would be reflected in prices.

He added that with the beginning of the partnership agreement, large quantities of European products would enter the country and they would be available in the Syrian markets.

"With the beginning of 2005, European products of various quality and quantity will enter the market as well as Arab products," Sannoufa said.

He noted that another event is going to take place at the start of 2005, when the Great Arab-Free-Trade Zone Agreement will be implemented.

"Arab and European products will be present in the market besides the national or local Syrian commodities, and this will help to create a genuine competition in prices. The consumer, therefore, will profit from this position," he underlined.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian economic expert Sayyed al-Bouz on Tuesday underlined the importance of inking the Syrian- European association agreement due to its being a means of economic development in Syria that calls for modernization and reunifying the Syrian industry in cooperation with the EU to be capable of competition in the international market.

Al-Thwara quoted the Egyptian export statement after attending a meeting at the Ministry of Economy to discuss bases of organizing management of the Syrian-European partnership.

He underlined that the big burden of the partnership implementation lies with Ministries of Economy and Industry in addition to the Customs Service, noting that the partnership accord should be implemented in a way that guarantees protection of the Syrian economy.
