Regional-USA, Politics, 12/22/2004
Director of the Middle East Studies Center at the American Ohio University Prof. Alam Bayned said that the gap between the United States and the Arab region is expanding due to misunderstanding each other's views, asserting necessity of reaching a common understanding through avoiding wrong ideas.
In a lecture delivered at the American Culture Center in Damascus, Bayned added that people in the region want a just and comprehensive peace.
He also talked about similarity and differences in the American invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, saying that both countries are in an important strategic areas and both had good relations with the former Soviet Union.
Prof. Bayned said Iraqis see that the presence of U.S. troops in Iraq is due to the oil wells in the country in addition to the other oil wells in the Middle East and Iran.
He acknowledged that the situation in Iraq was better before the U.S invasion, pointing out to the American interests in the Iraqi oil, Iran and the whole Middle East.
