Moroccan delegation sheds light on Sahara question in Colombia
Morocco-Colombia, Politics, 12/21/2004

A delegation from the southern Moroccan region of Oued Eddahab-Lagouira shed light, during a recent visit to Colombia, on the latest developments of the Sahara question.

The Moroccan delegation, led by ambassador Mohamed Maoulainine, held a series of meetings with speakers of the Colombian senate and House of Representatives, and with several Columbian officials, notably deputy minister for foreign affairs, Jaime Jiron Eduarte.

The meetings gave a historical overview on the Sahara dispute that opposes Morocco to the Polisario, a guerrilla movement claiming the separation of Moroccan southern provinces, known as the Sahara. This territory, previously occupied by Spain, was retrieved by the kingdom in 1975 under Madrid accords.

The delegation underscored Algeria's role in the conflict, through its military and logistic assistance to the separatists. Algiers, they said, opted for the creation of an absurd entity that carries the seeds of its own self-destruction.

The delegation insisted on Algeria's direct responsibility in the conflict, noting that it hampers all initiatives designed to bring the dispute to an end.

It also reiterated Morocco's stance for a political and consensual solution to the Sahara issue, in such as a way to preserve the territorial integrity of the country.

On their part, Colombian officials recalled at the meetings that their country has frozen the recognition of Polisario's self-proclaimed republic "SADR." This position, they said, aims to contribute positively to seeking a negotiated political solution part of international legality.
