New visit exchange between families in Morocco and Polisario camps
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 12/18/2004
Visit exchanges between families in southern Morocco and their relatives that are sequestered in the Polisario-controlled Tindouf camps resumed, on Friday, part of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) confidence-building measures.
Eight families from Lahmada camps (Algeria) flew to Dakhla while 7 other families headed for Tindouf camps to meet their relatives which they have not seen for over 25 years because of the conflict over Morocco's Southern provinces (known as the Sahara) that is opposing Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists who are claiming the secession of these provinces.
The Laayoune-based Moroccan office of coordination with Minurso, said the visit unfolded in good conditions.
The visit was initially scheduled for December 10, recalled the Office, but was postponed a week by the UNHCR because of logistic difficulties.
To date, 28 visits have been exchanged between families in southern Morocco and Tindouf camps, numbering 1,421 beneficiaries.
