Khartoum agreement with one rebel group, prepares for an attack in Darfur
Sudan, Politics, 12/18/2004

The Sudanese government yesterday recorded a political breakthrough in Darfur by signing a peace agreement with one rebel group which does not take part in Abuja negotiations, amid accusations for Khartoum of the responsibility concerning the deterioration of the security situation in the district.

Identical news said that the Sudanese government signed on Friday in Banjamina a peace agreement with the national movement for reforms and development, a rebel group which appeared recently in Darfur in the presence of Chad prime minister Mousa Fekke.

The agreement includes 8 points and calls in particular for halting the fighting and releasing the political detainees and war prisoners and to voluntarily evacuate the areas where the said rebel groups maintains control, as well as dismantling its weapons and its contribution to return back to civil life.

The agreement which was finalized after four days of tough negotiations between the two sides is only valid on areas controlled by the rebels of the national movement for reforms and development.

The chairman of the movement Nour Eddine Manawai Bersham considered the day when the agreement is signed as an important day for the movement because "we have signed a comprehensive agreement with the government." Government officials say that the said movement which is considered the third among the rebel groups and including some 3 thousand fighters, split from the rebellious al-Adal Wal Musawat ( justice and equity) movement on the ground that the renegades accused the leadership of the ( justice and equity) movement of giving attention to Darfur issues, rather than working for a general Sudanese agenda.
