Underway preparations for the Iraqi elections
Iraq, Politics, 12/18/2004

The independent higher commission for elections in Iraq has announced that 107 lists including 7200 candidates from 73 parties and 25 independent candidates and nine coalition lists will compete over 275 seats dedicated for the Interim national society.

In the Kurdistani national council elections, a coalition list including the two Kurdish main groups, the Kurdistani Democratic Party led by Masoud al-Barazani and the Kurdistani National Federation led by Jalal al-Talibani in addition to 14 parties with a total 499 candidates will compete to win 111 seats.

In the elections of the governorates seats ( 18 governorates ) there are 382 lists including some 7850 candidates.

Concerning the deteriorated security condition in Iraq, the Interim Iraqi President Ghazi Elyawer considered that all armies of the world will not be able to keep peace in Iraq unless there are efficient Iraqi security forces that honor human rights and does not oppress the Iraqis.

These assertions came amid renewed American accusations and those by the Interim Iraqi government to Syria over permitting sneaking of gunmen to Iraq. The commander of the American forces in Iraq, Gen. George Casey, in particular accused former officials in the Baath party in standing behind the armed operations as from Syria whose officials denied these accusations and described them as baseless.
